1. Why guests started asking
Electric cars reached 4.3% of India's passenger vehicle market in FY2026, up from 2.7% the year before, and electric car sales grew 84% over that period. Across all vehicle categories, EV penetration crossed 12% for the first time in June 2026.
The practical consequence for a hotel is narrow and specific. A guest who has driven 250–300 km to reach you does not need a fast charger. They need a bay that works while they sleep. If you have one, you are on their shortlist before they compare rooms; if you do not, the property down the road that does will take the booking.
This is also why charging reads differently on a hotel's balance sheet than on a fuel retailer's. You are not selling electricity. You are removing a reason not to book you.
2. The overnight maths
A 7.4 kW AC charger delivers about 7.4 kWh for every hour the car is plugged in. A guest who checks in at 9 PM and leaves at 7 AM is parked for ten hours:
More than a full charge for almost every electric car sold in India today.
That single number decides most hotel projects. It is why hotels rarely need DC fast charging: a 30–60 kW DC installation runs to ₹12–30 lakh including civil work, transformer capacity and approvals, and it solves a problem — refuelling in twenty minutes — that a hotel guest does not have. Dwell time is the hotel's advantage. AC charging is how you spend it.
The exception is a property with genuine turnover in the car park: a day-use restaurant, a banquet lawn, or a highway stopover where cars are present for ninety minutes rather than overnight. There, faster charging can be justified. A survey should establish which of these you actually are before anyone quotes hardware.
3. Where the charger goes
Placement is usually the difference between a straightforward installation and an expensive one, because the cost is dominated by the cable run, not the charger.
- Porte-cochère or entrance porch. Highly visible, easy for valet operation, and usually close to a distribution board. Exposed to weather and to reversing vehicles, so it needs an outdoor-rated enclosure and physical protection.
- Basement parking. Protected from weather and easy to control access to. Watch cable routing through fire compartments, clearance from exit routes, and ventilation requirements.
- Surface parking. Often the cheapest run if a board is nearby, but needs an IP-rated unit, a pedestal or wall, and a bay that will not be blocked by a non-EV.
Whichever you pick, allocate the bay properly. A charger that is permanently blocked by a petrol car is a complaint, not an amenity.
4. How a guest starts a session
The failure mode to avoid is a guest standing in a dark car park at 11 PM being asked to install an app and register a wallet. Three arrangements work in practice:
- Included in the room rate. Simplest for a guest, and the easiest to advertise. Access is controlled with an RFID card handed over at reception.
- Billed to the room. The session is metered and appears on checkout. Front office keeps control; the guest does nothing.
- Guest pays directly. A QR code at the charger starts and bills the session. Useful for day visitors and for properties that do not want charging inside the room folio.
All three depend on the charger being able to refuse a session it has not authorised — otherwise you are supplying free electricity to the street.
5. The electrical reality
A 7.4 kW single-phase charger draws roughly 32 A continuously. The questions that decide feasibility are the boring ones:
- Sanctioned load and existing peak demand. Charging at 9 PM may coincide with your own evening peak — kitchens, lifts, air conditioning.
- Protection. An MCB or RCBO, a Type A residual current device, and surge protection, plus a dedicated earthing arrangement for the charging point.
- Cable. Copper armoured cable sized for the run; market rates for 6 sq mm sit around ₹180–290 per metre, so a long run is a real line item.
- Load balancing. Once you have more than one bay, dynamic load management lets the chargers share the available capacity instead of forcing a supply upgrade.
A site survey exists to answer these before anyone specifies equipment. That is also the honest reason we do not quote a hotel over the phone.
6. What the national rules allow
The Ministry of Power's Guidelines for Installation and Operation of Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure, 2024 (issued 17 September 2024, superseding every version from 2018 onward) explicitly cover privately-owned and semi-restricted parking, including hotels and commercial complexes. Three provisions matter to a hotel:
- You may take a separate metered connection for charging, on a dedicated EV tariff, rather than running it off your commercial supply.
- The distribution licensee is held to a timeline — a new connection within three days in metropolitan areas, seven days in other municipal areas and fifteen days in rural areas once the application is complete, with 30 days allowed in hilly terrain.
- The EV tariff is single-part and capped at the Average Cost of Supply until 31 March 2028, with a lower rate during solar hours (0.7 × ACoS) and a higher one outside them (1.3 × ACoS).
Note the last point cuts against overnight charging on price, and in favour of it on convenience. For a hotel, the guest experience is usually worth more than the tariff differential — but if you run a day-use car park as well, daytime charging is genuinely cheaper to supply.
No licence is required to operate charging infrastructure; it is a de-licensed activity.
7. What it costs
We do not publish a price for a hotel installation, because the number is decided by your cable run, your board and your bay count, and quoting before the survey would be guesswork. What we can give you is the market context so you can sanity-check any quotation, ours included:
7.4 kW AC wallbox hardware — ₹25,000 to ₹50,000
Installation labour and materials — ₹8,000 to ₹25,000
A property setup of two to three AC bays — ₹5 lakh to ₹12 lakh
One or two DC fast chargers, 30–60 kW — ₹12 lakh to ₹30 lakh
Protective devices (MCB/RCBO, RCCB, SPD) — ₹2,500 to ₹4,500
Dedicated earthing pit — ₹3,000 to ₹6,000
These are industry-published ranges, not our quotation. A hotel that already has spare capacity near the parking area sits at the bottom of these bands; one that needs a new run across a basement and a load upgrade sits at the top. The survey tells you which you are, and it is free.
8. Before you speak to anyone
Five answers will make every conversation — with us or with anyone else — faster and cheaper:
- Your sanctioned load, and roughly where your evening peak sits against it.
- The distance from the nearest distribution board to the bay you have in mind.
- Who owns and controls the parking — you, a lease, or a municipal arrangement.
- How many bays you want now, and how many in three years.
- Whether you intend to bill guests or absorb charging into the room rate.

9. Questions we get asked
Do we need a DC fast charger at a hotel?
Usually not. A guest parked overnight gains around 74 kWh on a 7.4 kW AC charger in ten hours, which is a full charge for almost any EV sold in India. DC fast charging costs ₹12–30 lakh and solves a problem overnight guests do not have. It is worth considering only where cars turn over quickly, such as a day-use restaurant or a highway stop.
Can we charge guests for the electricity?
Yes. Sessions can be included in the room rate, metered and billed to the room at checkout, or paid directly by the guest at the charger. All three need the charger to authorise the session, which is what RFID or QR access provides.
How long does the electricity connection take?
Under the 2024 national guidelines, a distribution licensee must provide a new connection within three days in metropolitan areas, seven days in other municipal areas and fifteen days in rural areas, once the application is complete. The electrical work at your property is usually the longer part.
Will charging overload the hotel's supply?
That is what the site survey establishes. A 7.4 kW charger draws about 32 A. Where several bays are planned, dynamic load balancing lets them share available capacity so the building's demand is respected instead of forcing a supply upgrade.
Can we start with one charger and add more later?
Yes, and it is usually the right way to begin. The thing to get right on day one is the electrical provision and an OCPP-compatible charger, so that adding bays later is a cable and a unit rather than a redesign.
Which cars will it work with?
The 7.4 kW AC wallbox uses a Type 2 connector, the common AC standard for electric cars in India. Vehicle-specific compatibility is confirmed during the survey.
