1. What it actually costs
Nobody publishes this clearly, so here it is. These are market figures for India in 2026, not our quotation — your number depends on the cable run and whether the supply needs enhancing.
Installation labour and materials — ₹8,000 to ₹25,000
Typical total, installed — ₹35,000 to ₹75,000
Within that:
Copper armoured cable, 6 sq mm — ₹180 to ₹290 per metre (a 15 m run is roughly ₹2,700–₹4,000)
Protective devices — MCB/RCBO, RCCB and surge protection — ₹2,500 to ₹4,500
Dedicated earthing pit — ₹3,000 to ₹6,000
The biggest single variable is the distance from your meter board to where the car parks. A charger on the far side of a compound wall can add more in cable and civil work than the charger itself costs.
2. 3.3 kW, 7.4 kW or more?
Most Indian homes should install 7.4 kW, and the reasoning is arithmetic.
- 3.3 kW — the portable cable that came with the car. About 3.3 kWh per hour, so a twelve-hour night gives roughly 40 kWh. Fine for a short commute; slow if you arrive home nearly empty.
- 7.4 kW — about 7.4 kWh per hour, so the same twelve hours gives roughly 89 kWh. A full charge for any electric car sold in India, with room to spare, and it runs on an ordinary single-phase domestic supply.
- 11 or 22 kW — needs a three-phase connection. Very few homes have one and fewer need it, because overnight parking makes the extra speed pointless.
For almost every household the answer is 7.4 kW single-phase: the car is parked far longer than it needs to be.
3. Can your connection take it?
A 7.4 kW charger draws around 32 A continuously — comparable to two air conditioners running flat out, all night, every night.
Two things decide whether that is fine:
- Your sanctioned load. If it sits close to your current usage, adding a charger needs a load enhancement from your distribution company. It is routine, and cheaper than most people expect.
- Your existing wiring. The charger must have its own dedicated circuit from the board. It cannot share a socket ring, and an ordinary 16 A socket is not a substitute.
Home charging is billed at your normal domestic tariff. Separate EV metering exists and is worth asking your DISCOM about, but for most households the domestic rate on the existing connection is simplest.
4. What must be in the quotation
Read this section twice, because it is where cheap quotations are cheap. A home charging point should include, as a minimum:
- A dedicated circuit from the distribution board, correctly sized for the run.
- An MCB or RCBO rated for the charger.
- A Type A residual current device. Charging introduces DC leakage that an ordinary Type AC device is not designed to detect.
- Surge protection, which matters more in India than in most markets.
- A dedicated earthing arrangement for the charging point.
- An enclosure rated for where it is mounted — IP54 or better outdoors.
If a quotation does not state the RCD type and the earthing, ask why before comparing prices. Those two lines are the difference between a safe installation and a cheap one.
5. Villa or apartment?
An independent house is straightforward: your board, your wall, your parking. An apartment is a different project, because the parking is usually common property even when the bay is assigned to you.
The short version is that a society's ability to refuse outright is narrower than most committees believe — Section 43 of the Electricity Act obliges the licensee to supply on request, and a January 2025 Bombay High Court division bench found in favour of a resident's right to install — but the society is entitled to govern the cable route, the protection and the building's load.

6. If you are buying an EV in Uttar Pradesh
Worth knowing while you budget. Uttar Pradesh offers a 100% exemption from road tax and registration fees on electric vehicles sold and registered in the state between 14 October 2025 and 13 October 2027, under the revised scheme that ties the benefit to vehicles built in UP.

7. Questions we get asked
How much does a home EV charger cost in India?
Market figures for 2026 put a 7.4 kW wallbox at ₹25,000–50,000 and installation at ₹8,000–25,000, so ₹35,000–75,000 installed is the usual range. The biggest variable is the distance from your meter board to the parking spot.
Do I need 7.4 kW, or is the cable in the boot enough?
The supplied 3.3 kW cable gives roughly 40 kWh over a twelve-hour night. A 7.4 kW wallbox gives about 89 kWh in the same time, a full charge for any EV sold in India. For most households 7.4 kW single-phase is right; 11 kW and 22 kW need a three-phase connection that very few homes have.
Will I need to increase my sanctioned load?
Possibly. A 7.4 kW charger draws about 32 A, similar to two air conditioners running continuously. If your sanctioned load is close to your current peak, a load enhancement is needed. It is a routine application and usually cheaper than expected.
What safety equipment should be included?
A dedicated circuit, an MCB or RCBO, a Type A residual current device, surge protection, a dedicated earthing arrangement, and an enclosure rated IP54 or better outdoors. The Type A RCD matters specifically: charging introduces DC leakage an ordinary Type AC device is not designed to detect.
Can I install a charger in my apartment's parking bay?

Is home charging cheaper than public charging?
Considerably. Home charging is billed at your domestic tariff with no service margin on top. It is the cheapest electricity your car will get.
